Knights of Hijjia by Kreuzheva Knights of Hijjia by Kreuzheva
One of many factors differentiating the Theocratic State of Hijjia from their neighbors on Unus Solum is their military, held together by several knightly and crusading orders, as well as pious volunteers, who all serve underneath the whims of the Pontiff. Despite technological and tactical innovations within the region, the knightly orders of the Holy See are still somewhat of a power, and even moreso following the collapse of neighboring Hoffnung into several smaller warlords. These are some examples of the military orders of Hijjia, from left to right respectively.

Knights of the Winged Cross: The standard knights of the Holy See, and numbering over a thousand in number, these professional soldiers represent the median of Hijjian strength. Seemingly outdated in their aged chestplates, chainmail, and sallets, these medieval pieces of apparel provide modest protection against small arms, while the anti-tank rifles that have become their standard provide a powerful punch against light armor and infantry, even at distant ranges. Fanatical, protected, and well-armed, these knights are strong line infantry to reinforce the Church's vanguard.

Order of the Hetzers: In comparison to many of the heavily-armored knights of the Holy See and the Pontiff's Court, the Order of the Hetzers are more flamboyant and arrogant, serving as light infantry and skirmishers that reinforce the main bulwark of the Hijjian defense. Known particularly for their feathered and wide-brimmed hats, along with colorful uniforms, many only wear a steel cuirass into battle - if even that. Excellent sharpshooters, many prefer smaller caliber long rifles to the heavy weaponry of other knightly orders, being lighter to carry on their frequently long patrols and scouting missions. Absurd, fearless, and deadly, these troops strike terror into even the distant enemies of the Church.

Holy Order of Saint Antioch: It is a school of thought within some sections of the Church, that God must be witnessed in absolute awe, and that his will is so great, that it must be projected whereever it may - such is the thought that founded the Holy Order of Saint Antioch. One of the three great orders of the Pontiff's Court, the grenadier knights of Saint Antioch are outfitted with the finest smithed armor and tailored clothes, armed with a powerful grenade launcher to instill fear in the enemies of the Church. Some of the most fanatical followers of the Church, and effective against anything that may stand in their way, these knights leave nothing but destruction in their wake for those who refuse to repent.

Probably not much heavier than what modern soldiers have to lug around nowadays.

Them Antioch guys remind me so much of the elite knight set in Dark Souls. Great job~ I hope these guys perform as awesomely as they look.

Question, how does one become a knight?  can knights of the different Orders join other Orders?

Knights are typically knighted by the Mountain Pope, although some Orders may perform knighting ceremonies for their members. Certain members of the lower Congregations might be recognized for bravery or their faith, and may be knighted if they agree to swear an oath to God and the Church.

Orders are not necessarily exclusive, but typically you only join one knightly order, because each issue their own restrictions and oaths, and overlapping them becomes particularly burdensome. Hetzers believe in charisma and cunning, which does not necessarily cooperate well with the stances of the Holy Order of Saint Antioch, who generally prefer rash destruction, shock, and awe. Orders are pretty reluctant to accept members of other orders, too, considering they cannot trust you to live to the commitment of either Order.

That being said, it happens, but these are mostly ceremonial or honorary status.

Seems like they operate in different locations.. If ever they work together who will get to command the mixed unit of knights? Are the knightly orders  Hijjia's official military force? Is there some sort of command structure between the Knightly Orders?

Ohh. oki

The Knightly Orders, combined with the Congregations composed of volunteers, can be considered as the military force of Hijjia, yeah. They are not as organized or advanced as several conventional militaries, but I suppose they make due with religious ferver, and provide some forms of civil service in peace as well as fighting in war - so it's a mixed bag.

There is a type of hierarchy between Orders, somewhat based on geography, in that the Orders that guard the Pontiff and the Holy See are considered the highest authority. This is followed by the Orders who form the garrison of Nordentor, Orders who operate outside of Nordentor, and the Congregations which are typically rabble gathered from the populace, criminals, converts, and generally any number of religious volunteers.

In the event of a Holy War or Crusade, where several Orders who typically don't operate together, operate together, the hierarchy applies in normal situations. The leaders of the Orders who guard the Holy See, typically the Order of Sword Saints or Order of Saint Antioch, are the ones who will usually lead in that scenario. Exceptions are usually made during certain conditions, such as a direct order from the Pontiff, or the presense of another Order who is more experienced with the situation at hand. Naturally, Congregations are rarely considered for leadership.

I see. Well then, I hope they perform well. I'm quite eager to see them in action. Something which seems to be coming every closer since the artwar has started.

I got to thinking, will Hijjia employ militias or armed groups that aren't part of any knightly order? Would such groups ever get to command Knights?

I hope they do as well, otherwise it looks reallly bad on my part after all the effort put into it. :P

Militia and other irregulars are usually lumped into the Congregations, and while not as standard as the Knightly Orders, typically make up for it with captured equipment and weapons. Think of it as the relation between the North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong, if that helps clear the relations between the Knights and Congregations respectively.

It is unlikely that the Congregations would ever be in a position to formally dictate orders to the Knightly Orders, but they have a better understanding of the field situation, so they may indirectly establish where fighting and troop movements occur.

Haha, yeah. eventually, they might have to ditch the plate armor. But that's just the aesthetics, if you have the right stats I'm sure they'll be fine in the Airfortress biz.

Ohh that's a good  way to put it. Clears things up for me.
